Welcome from the Provost

The dawn of a new day

In 1917, Texas State Senator Benjamin Berkeley and his colleagues, after years of trying to secure a state university for the Trans Pecos/Big Bend region, telegraphed the Alpine Commercial Club from Austin with the good news that “[a]fter a long, hard struggle we have succeeded in securing passage of the Sul Ross Normal Bill…This means the dawn of a new day…”  Sul Ross State University is the manifestation of that legislation.  Sul Ross Normal College enrolled its first class in June, 1920.  Since 2017, we have been celebrating one hundred years of Sul Ross State University and its service to the Trans Pecos/Big Bend region and the State of Texas.

During the 2019-2020 academic year, we celebrate the close of Sul Ross’s first one hundred years and the beginning of Sul Ross’s second century.  Part of Sul Ross’s transition from its first to its second century is our transition in academic leadership, as well.  Dr. Rob Kinucan begins his appointment as Executive Vice President and Provost this summer and assumed the responsibilities of the chief academic officer on July 1.  Dr. Kinucan has over thirty years of service to Sul Ross State University.  He is a Professor of Natural Resource Management and has served as Director of the Division of Range Animal Science, Dean of the College of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, and, most recently, as the Associate Provost for Graduate Studies and Research.

As SRSU’s Chief Academic Officer, Provost Kinucan will work with faculty, students, staff, and administration on the Sul Ross campuses in Alpine, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde to offer the highest quality academic offerings.  As Sul Ross enters its second century, it does so after a successful reaccreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools—Commission on Colleges.  The university enters its second century enthusiastically with a new graduate program in educational technology and with plans to open a new undergraduate program in nursing in Summer, 2020.  There is a renewed emphasis in international studies.  This past year SRSU students studied in Italy, France, and China.

As we enter the university’s second century, Sul Ross State University offers our students opportunities to major in the sciences and mathematics, the humanities, the fine arts, agriculture, the industrial arts, the social sciences, the behavioral sciences, business, and education.  Our students also have the opportunity to participate in research through the Borderlands Research Institute and the Rio Grande Research, to perform in the productions of the Theatre of the Big Bend, the University Chorus, the Sul Ross bands, and the SRSU Musical Theatre.

It has been an honor and a privilege to work with SRSU students, faculty, staff, and administration these past four-and-a-half years.  I am looking forward to returning to the classroom as a Professor of Political Science and Public Administration.  I do so with a greater appreciation for the Sul Ross community and its contributions to our region and state, and I do so confident that under Provost Kinucan’s academic leadership, the university will continue to grow in academic excellence.  As Senator Berkeley’s letter affirmed, “[t]his means the dawn of a new day.”

Dr. Jim Case
