Sul Ross State University awards a variety of scholarships each year, most of them to full-time students. The list of available scholarships for the Middle Rio Grande Campuses students is found below.

To be considered, an applicant must have an admissions application on file in the Registrar's Office and must meet all the requirements for unconditional admission to SRSU and be in good academic and disciplinary standing.

Recipients of scholarships must be enrolled as full-time students (12 semester credit hours for undergraduate students and 9 semester credit hours for graduate students) unless othewise specified.

Priority deadline for 2019-2020 scholarships is February 15, 2019.

Antonio R. Sanchez Sr. Memorial Scholarship

  • Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 hours; however, preference will be given to full-time students.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be a resident of a county served by IBC Bank of Eagle Pass.
  • Must submit a 150 word essay.
  • Must submit at least one reference, verifying completion of 50 hours of community service.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • If recipient withdraws from the university, s/he will be expected to repay scholarship amount.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

The Bank and Trust Scholarship

  • Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 hours; however, preference will be given to full-time students.
  • Undergraduates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Must be a resident of a county served by The Bank and Trust of Del Rio, specifically Val Verde county.
  • Submit one or two short paragraphs about what financial responsibility means to student.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Bill and Lois Rankin Scholarship

  • Be accepted at SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses.
  • Must have successfully completed 24 semester hours at SRSU.
  • Undergraduates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be enrolled in at least 9 hours.
  • Graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be enrolled in at least 6 hours.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Renewal is contingent on maintaining GPA and enrollment requirements.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Edmund P. Kuempel Scholarship Program

  • Be accepted at SRSU.
  • Student must be enrolled in a course of study which results in an academic degree.
  • Candidate must have satisfactorily completed 12 hours of course work at an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.5. If accomplished at a non-Texas State University System school, completed coursework must be transferrable to the TSUS constituent institution.
  • The candidate must submit a short essay (no longer than a one-page, double-spaced) including a statement of the candidate’s goals and reasons for pursuing the degree.
  • The candidate must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state of Texas.
  • The candidate must not have received the scholarship previously.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Eagle Pass Rotary Scholarship

  • Must be a graduate of Eagle Pass High School or C. C. Winn High School.
  • Must be admitted to the SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses teacher education program.
  • Must be a resident of Eagle Pass and Maverick County.
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Esmeralda Rosalia Avalos Teacher Education Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.  
  • Must be eligible for admission to the SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses teacher education program.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher (undergraduate) or 3.5 (graduate).
  • A brief essay (100-200 words) about interest in and commitment to the teaching profession.
  • Recommendation from an SRSU MRGC education faculty member.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Preference given to full-time students.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Esmeralda Rosalia Avalos Nursing Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.  
  • Must be fully admitted to the BSN program at SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • A brief essay (100-200 words) about interest in and commitment to nursing as a profession.
  • Recommendation from a faculty member.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Preference given to full-time students.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

First State Bank of Uvalde Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.  
  • Must be fully admitted and degree seeking at SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must be a resident of a community served by First State Bank of Uvalde (Uvalde, Campwood, Carrizo Springs, Concan, Leakey, Sabinal, or Utopia).
  • Submit one or two short paragraphs about what financial responsibility means to student.
  • Enrolled in at least nine hours.
  • Renewal dependent on maintaining all above conditions.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

International Good Neighbor Council Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.  
  • Must be Resident of Val Verde county or Kinney county.
  • Beginning students must be fully admitted to SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses, have an overall GPA of at least 3.0, and be enrolled at least half-time during the period of award. 
  • Continuing students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at the University, have an overall GPA of at least 3.0, and enrolled at least half-time during the period of award.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

Jefferson Barr Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.
  • Must be a currently enrolled SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses as a criminal justice major.
  • Must be a Texas resident making normal progress toward a criminal justice degree, have an overall GPA of at least 2.5, and enrolled at least half-time during the period of award. 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident. 
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Math & Science Scholarship

  • Must be a undergraduate math or biology major.
  • Must be a high school graduate of a district in the Middle Rio Grande region (Atascosa, Bandera, Edwards, Dimmit, Fio, Kerr, Kinney, La Salle, Maverick, Medina, Real, Uvalde, Val Verde, or Zavala).
  • Must have a cumulative average of at least 2.5.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Maxey Companies Scholarship

  • Must be enrolled full time.
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for undergraduates or 3.5 GPA for graduate students.
  • Must be a resident of a county served by Maxey Companies, specifically Kerr, La Salle, Maverick, Val Verde, Uvalde counties.
  • Preference given to students enrolled full-time, however, 9 hours required.
  • Submit one or two short paragraphs about what financial responsibility means to student.
  • Renewal dependent on maintaining all above conditions.
  • Recipient agrees to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Praxedis Mata Torres Teacher Education

  • Must be unconditionally admitted to SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses.
  • Must be admitted to the SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses teacher education program.
  • Submit a written essay (100-200 words) discussing why the student wants to become a teacher.
  • Recommendation from an MRGC faculty member.
  • Preference will be given to graduates of high schools located within the SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses service area.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

Rio Grande College Excellence Scholarship

  • Must be a member of Phi Theta Kappa (or equivalent community college honor society) - documentation is required.
  • Minimum 3.2 transfer GPA
  • Must be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course (online or in person).
  • Award may be renewable.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

Rudy F. Rodriguez Nursing Scholarship

  • Must be a junior or senior unconditionally admitted to the SRSU nursing program.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Preference will be given to Del Rio Residents.
  • Submit a written essay (200 words discussing the student's future plans in the nursing profession).
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Sandra Stanley Coleman Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.
  • Must be a full time (12 hours) undergraduate student at SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses during the period of award.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Submit a written essay (200-400 words) discussing the student's future goals and any participation in community service work.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from one faculty member.
  • Consideration will be given to students associated with the student association.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

Student Deposit

  • Scholarships are available for fall only.
  • Must be undergraduate.
  • Must be a Texas resident enrolled full time (12 hours).
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

Student Service Fee Scholarship Fund-Graduate

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.
  • Must be fully admitted in a degree seeking program.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours.
  • Must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA after a minimum of 6 credit hours and be in good disciplinary standing.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

Student Service Fee Scholarship Fund-Undergraduate

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.
  • Must be fully admitted in a degree seeking program.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 9 semester credit hours
  • Must  maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and be in good disciplinary standing
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Uvalde Retired Teachers Association

  • Must be unconditionally admitted to SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses.
  • Must be admitted to the SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses teacher education program and have Uvalde as their designated Home campus.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduates.
  • Must submit a 1-2 paragraph essay explaing why they wish to be a teacher.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 3 hours.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline: February 15, 2019

Valeriano (Bowie) Ibarra Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for fall and spring.
  • Begining students must be unconditionally admitted to SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses. 
  • Continuing students must be in good acadmic and disciplinary standing at SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses.
  • Must be a graduate of Uvalde High School enrolled at SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses. If no qualified applicant is available from Uvalde CISD, applicants meeting the criteria from the following counties will be considered: Atascosa, Dimmitt, Frio, Maverick, Medina, Uvalde, Val Verde and Zavala.
  • Must be admitted (or eligible for admission) to the Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College teacher education program.
  • Must have a least a 2.75 GPA. 
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019

Whataburger Scholarship

  • Must be fully admitted and seeking a degree at SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.5 for graduates.
  • Must be a resident from one of the communities served by SRSU Middle Rio Grande Campuses and WHATABURGER, specifically: Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Uvalde.
  • Preference given to students enrolled full-time.
  • Recipient must agree to attend an approved Financial Literacy course.
  • Priority Deadline:  February 15, 2019
