Message from President Pete Gallego

Welcome to Sul Ross State University!  2020 marked the 100th year since the very first students registered on the campus in Alpine, Texas.  Since that day in June of 1920, Sul Ross has provided a quality education to tens of thousands of students and has built a network of successful graduates across the state, nation, and even around the world.

Over the course of our next 100 years, the quality of our educational offerings will only continue to improve. We consistently maximize the benefits of the area in which we are located.  The Chihuahuan Desert is an incredible laboratory for our geology and biology students.  The Rio Grande, both as a river and as an international border, provides ample opportunities to learn about business and trade as well as the challenges of providing water to a growing population. Our education department supplies teachers and principals to many school districts around the state.

In addition to our varied and excellent academic programs, athletics as Sul Ross also has much to offer.  Our Lobo Men’s basketball team is a perennial powerhouse and the Western Division champions for our conference. Our baseball and softball teams are known for their prowess on the field. And, of course, our Sul Ross Rodeo team has won nine national championships and is tied for the most national championships won by any college or university in the nation!

Our university has grown and prospered since that June day of 1920. Sul Ross now maintains four campuses in the Big Bend and the Middle Rio Grande areas of Texas. Each campus is a place where you can invest in your future through a bachelor and master's program. Our partnerships with local communities of Alpine, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde also provide students with a welcoming environment and a chance to both work and play during your college experience.

If there is one word that describes Sul Ross, it is “opportunity.” This is a place that opens doors. Many of our students are first generation college students or students coming back to college and hoping to get farther ahead through education. We at Sul Ross are extremely proud to offer our students a quality education at among the most affordable prices in Texas.  In fact, a New York Times study ranked Sul Ross 21st out of 369 nationwide colleges and universities in likelihood that a graduate of our university would move up two or more percentage quintiles in income.

Our commitment is to offer you the ability not only to improve your life through education, provide a nurturing environment where you can learn with individual and personalized help from our faculty and staff, build a network of friends and associates on whom you can rely throughout your professional career, and help you get an affordable, quality education — but also to leave our campuses with relatively little or no debt.

My goal is to ensure that Sul Ross provides you with the same types of amazing experiences and the same types of career opportunities it gave me. Sul Ross has proved a launching pad for hungry students with something to prove across many disciplines. Sul Ross graduates have become leaders in fields such as science, education, law, medicine, agriculture, business, public policy, and fine arts.

Sul Ross can change your life - and help you change your community and the world. I invite you to come visit. And, as we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we invite you to join us on the journey towards our next 100 years.  I look forward to greeting you personally and welcoming you to our community of scholars!
